Excursions
Juma Lodge is located on an island on the Juma River just 100kms south of Manaus. This area is famous for its primary rainforest and vast wildlife including birds, spider monkeys, squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, sloths, capibaras and much more. During your stay at Juma Lodge, you will have the opportunity to head out daily on activities led by an expert English speaking guide in search of the local fauna and learn about this unique ecosystem. Below is an example of an itinerary for a 4-day/3-night stay.
Day 1: Manaus - Juma Lodge
Depart from your hotel in Manaus in the early morning (around 8:00am). The trip takes three hours via speed boat, van and speed boat again. During your trip you might encounter pink dolphins and you will stop to see the amazing Meeting of the Waters, the spot where the muddy waters of the Solimões River and the black waters of the Negro River run-side by-side (without mixing) to form the great Amazonas River. It’s even possible to feel the difference in temperature between the tworivers, which is about 8°C.
In this area, you’ll enjoy your first contact with the jungle and observe giant water lilies. After arriving at Juma Lodge around 11 am, a welcome juice prepared with exotics fruits will await you. For lunch, around noon, an Amazonian and international cuisine will be served. There will be an afternoon canoe tour around 3pm through the igarapés (Amazonian creeks) and the igapós (flooded forest). Along the way you may even see some river dolphins. Afterward, you’ll return to the Juma Lodge and have dinner around 7pm. After dinner (around 8pm) you may go out in a canoe for alligator spotting.
*Afternoon transfer is possible, leaving, at the latest, at 2:30pm from Porto do Ceasa and arriving at Juma in the late afternoon. Pick-up times vary by location.
Important: this option does not include the first day's lunch and the canoe tour. If there is a flight delay that makes it impossible for the passenger(s) to make the 2:30pm transfer, the passenger(s) will have to stay in Manaus and take the transfer the next day at 8:00 am.
Day 2: Juma Lodge
Early in the morning, around 5:15 am, we will leave for a sunrise excursion, witnessing the transformation of the dark water of the Juma River into a mirror and listening to the sights and sounds of the waking birds (our guides are trained in bird watching). Breakfast will be served around 7 am with typical fruits and food from the local area.
Around 8:30 am we will leave for a jungle hike. Once inside the Amazon Forest, you’ll feel its charm and greatness. All tours are led by a lodge guide with great knowledge of the area and who will pass along important concepts about jungle survival. We’ll return to the lodge for lunch around noon.
After lunch, around 2:30pm, we’ll go on a tour around the hotel. Juma was built on stilts, and during this tour it will be seen from another angle: below. This tour will show the interesting way in which the hotel was built. The tour is by boat (during the rainy season) or on foot (during the dry season). After the tour, around 3pm, we will board a wooden boat, (the same kind the local river dwellers use) to catch the famous Piranha, as well as other fish in the region. Afterward, we’ll enjoy the sunset on the return to Juma. Dinner will be complemented by the fish you caught earlier, cooked the Amazon way. Later, around 8pm, one of our guides will perform an informal speech about his life (our guides are all natives) and the customs and legends of the river dwellers.
Day 3: Juma Lodge
Breakfast will be served around 7am, and then around 9am lunch (regional cuisine made on the grill) will be served in the jungle after a walk. After lunch, tourists can rest in hammocks. Around 3pm we will have a visit to the house of a local native to learn more about their fascinating culture. The native will pass on his knowledge of medicinal plants and demonstrate how to make farinha de mandioca (cassava flour), the main economic activity of the region. We’ll also have the opportunity to witness the extraction of latex from a rubber tree (responsible for Manaus’ wealth in the late nineteenth century). Then we’ll return to the lodge and have dinner around 7pm.
Day 4: Juma Lodge - Manaus
Breakfast around 7am. We’ll return to Manaus at around 8am, arriving at about 11:00 a.m. and then going to the airport or to your hotel in Manaus.
